My Visceral Response

This is a photo taken about three years ago during the time I was part of a youth group. We traveled up north to Salt Lake City, and during our stay we drove to a nearby canyon and went on a hike to a waterfall and this is a picture of a little portion of that trail we hiked on. I love this photo because it highlights my favorite experiences on that trip.

Line: The lines that are formed from the roots is what leads your eyes forward and upward, and maybe want to cause the viewer to press play( if it were a video) to see what's around the corner.

Color: With the light green color on the leaves you could almost assume that it was spring time. The lighter shades of brown coming from the dirt and roots gives more of a peaceful and calming feeling compared if it had a more intense shade for example a dark rich brown.

Space: With the out of focus bush on the bottom of the photo and the shaded areas over the ground it gives you a sense of closure. With the tree above giving that unnoticed feeling of protection, and the clear ground with the roots being revealed gives a sense a clarity of vision, not just because you know where to step, but also knowing that this trail has been traveled before by many travelers giving you confidence that you to can make it to your destination. There is not too much negative space, but because of the bushes on the left being out of focus it gives more depth and thus more space.

Texture: You can feel a lot of different textures in this photo starting with the leaves. You could also imagine feeling them as if you were to take a step and the leaves would brush against your leg. The roots give texture because of the contrast which comes from the certain angle of the light streaming through. With the glimmering blues coming from the out of focus sky adds a soft texture to the photo. The loose dirt at the bottom right photo gives a grainy look and permeates a tender feeling of wanting to step carefully.
